29 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

CALIFONE – “EVERY AMNESIA MOVIE”

Chicago indie rock vets Califone have announced a new album, The Villagers Companion, due February 21 via Jealous Butcher Records. Along with the announcement comes the slow-burning single “Every Amnesia Movie.”

KATHRYN MOHR – “TAKE IT”

Oakland-based artist Kathryn Mohr’s debut album, Waiting Room, is due out on January 24 via The Flensr, and she’s given us another early taste of it with the grungy “Take It.” “I rarely know what I’m talking about until way after a song is done,” she says. “Lyrics are the result of emotional vomit and blind scribblings, understanding comes when I get as close as I can to being a listener rather than a creator. ‘Take It,’ now that it’s in the rear view mirror, is about abusive relationships, dream logic, dehumanization, superstition, power imbalances, and paradoxes. It’s about getting dragged through rubble while holding on to a thread of hope and finally letting go of your own will because of your own growth. It’s one of my favorite songs on the record.”

WHATEVER THE WEATHER (LORAINE JAMES) – “12°C”

Electronic musician Loraine James has announced her second album under her Whatever The Weather alias, Whatever the Weather II, due March 14 via Ghostly International. Here’s the ethereal lead single “12°C.”

PATTERSON HOOD – “THE POOL HOUSE”

Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams, the new solo album from Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood, arrives next month, and here’s another preview, “The Pool House.” The song “was originally inspired by a night I spent at a creepy rental,” he says. “A literal pool house for an apartment complex that I rented cheap for the night during a solo tour. It was off-season and the pool was dark green and filled with algae. The whole thing was creepy and as I’d had a couple of drinks, my mind was definitely wandering, conjuring up some macabre shit….It’s one of the weirdest and most twisted tracks I have ever recorded and I’m really thrilled with how it all turned out.”

STATICLONE (BLACKLISTED) – “HONEYCOMB”

Staticlone, the band formed by Blacklisted vocalist George Hirsch and bassist Dave Walling in 2021, have signed to Relapse and announced their debut album, Better Living Through Static Vision, due on March 7. Rounded out by drummer Jeff Ziga, the band have been dishing out some crusty, D-beating, Motorhead-meets-Discharge vibes, as you can hear on lead single “Honeycomb.”

LOTS OF HANDS – “BARNYARD”

UK duo Lots of Hands’ new album Into a Pretty Room arrives this Friday, and ahead of that they’ve shared a final advance single, the moody “barnyard.” Billy Woodhouse says, “When Elliot and I first started properly sitting down to make a record, he came with the most basic little guitar riff. I recorded it and then looped it on a Logic track. We had a few beers and just made some mad shit on it. We did it in like 20 minutes and it’s probably my favorite song on the album.”

DECIUS (FAT WHITE FAMILY) – “QUEEN OF 14TH ST”

DECIUS, the techno group featuring Lias Saoudi of Fat White Family, have shared another song from upcoming album Decius Vol. II (Splendour & Obedience) is out January 31 and they’ve just unleashed another twisted banger from it.

POPULATION II – “LE THE EST PRET”

Montreal’s Population II have announced their third album, Maintenant Jamais, which will be out March 28 via Bonsound. The group look at the tea leaves for answers on this groovy first single.

BARTEES STRANGE – “WANTS NEEDS”

Bartees Strange’s third album Horror comes out next month, and the latest single is “Wants Needs.” “I realized a couple years ago that if music is really going to work out long-term, I want/need more fans,” he says. “Of course – it’s a timing and numbers game – but race is a powerful component too. I don’t see a lot of people like me in the indie space making long term livings on their records. I worry people may have a hard time connecting to me because I don’t look/sound like them. That I’m fun to root for, but not actually supported. This song is about how much that worries me – fully understanding that a lot of these neurosis are of my own making.”

FUSILIER – “NIGHTMARE MUSCLE”

Bartees also played guitar on another new single out today, Fusilier’s “Nightmare Muscle.” It’s off his debut album Ambush, due out on March 28 via NOT MUCH. “It takes a special kind of strength not to waste away into nothing given the horrors of the world and the horrors of our aging bodies and minds,” Fusilier says.

THE WEATHER STATION – “MIRROR”

“I wanted the song to warp and disintegrate; to come in and out of being like the imaginary scaffold that holds up a fantasy or cognitive dissonance,” says Tamara Lindemann of “Mirror,” the final pre-release single from The Weather Station’s new album Humanhood that’s out this week. “In the end, the band grows garbled and comes apart, giving way to a suspension of synth and string textures. I wanted it to feel like being bathed in light; maybe the light I was talking about in the song.”

CHLOE MORIONDO – “SHORELINE”

Chloe Moriondo has shared her first single of the year as she prepares a new album. “‘shoreline’ is very near and dear to my heart,” she says. “It encapsulates a lot of the feelings that came from my first big breakup, and I poured a lot of myself into it. I hope it’s gently loved ♡”

RICHARD DAWSON – “GONDOLA”

Here’s a new single from Richard Dawson’s upcoming album End of the Middle which comes with a cool video directed by CLUMP Collective, who say: “We had a wonderful time filming in the frosty streets and cozy pubs of Bristol with the talented Jenny Coverack. Rather than visually illustrating the song, we let Rich’s imagery-rich lyrics take centre stage, focusing on the power of narration. Collaborating with Rich and Jenny was a true pleasure.”

IMMERSION & SUSS – “STATE OF MOTION”

This collaboration between Immersion (Wire’s Colin Newman and Minimal Compact’s Malka Spigel) and country-dreampop pioneers SUSS will release new album Nanocluster Vol. 3 on Valentine’s Day and here’s the atmospheric/motorik new single “State of Motion.”

THE TUBS – “NARCISSIST”

“‘Narcissist’ is another tune about dating post-grief,” says Owen “O” Williams, frontman for The Tubs. “It’s about hearing someone’s a sociopathic nightmare and wanting to be manipulated or abused as a distraction from the larger nightmare of death. It’s also about noticing a kind of sociopathic aspect of yourself in which you see your life as an interesting plot rather than something real and emotionally consequential. So it’s fitting that Nicholls does some of his most Marr-like guitar work, but we also wanted to create a kind of sad crooner atmosphere.” The Tubs’ new album Cotton Crown is out March 7.

THE CONVENIENCE – “I GOT EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED”

Nick Corson and Duncan Troast have worked with artists like Rui Gabriel and Drugdealer but as The Convience make angular guitar pop. The band’s new album Like Cartoon Vampires will be out April 18 via Winspear and this first single has a very appealing late-’70s vibe to it.

DELIVERY – “DEADLINES”

Aussie band Delivery release their new album Force Majeure on Friday and here’s one last early taste. They say “Deadlines” is “Quite self explanatory,” adding, “Sometimes life is busy and hard and if you’re keeping on top of everything you’re a boss! But it’s also okay if you’re not keeping on top of things because life is hard and busy and you still are a boss anyway!”

GLOIN – “CONTROLFREAK69”

Toronto post-punk band Gloin have announced new album All of your anger is actually shame (and I bet that makes you angry) which will be out March 28 via Mothland. “controlfreaks69” is a taut ripper.

FLORA FROM KANSAS – “THE GHOST IS ME”

Bedroom shoegaze artist Flora From Kansas has announced her debut EP which will be out March 14 via UK label Melodic. “The Ghost Is Me” was inspired by classic horror film Carnival of Souls and was mixed by Ali Chant (Yard Act, Hot Chip).

SWERVEDRIVER – “VOLUME CONTROL”

Shoegaze greats Swervedriver will be back with The World’s Fair EP that will be out March 7 via Outer Battery Records. This is their first new music in five years, and they made the EP with Ride’s Mark Gardener, along with TJ Doherty and Rick Beato, plus contributions from Will Foster, Calina De La Mare and Sarah Willson. Here’s the terrific first single.

MIKI BERENYI TRIO – “8TH DEADLY SIN”

The Miki Berenyi Trio, who are led by former Lush singer/guitarist Miki Berenyi and also include Moose’s KJ McKillop and Oliver Cherer (all three also played in Piroshka), have announced their debut album, Tripla, which will be out April 4 via Bella Union. The album artwork is by Chris Bigg, who worked on many of Lush’s original era records as well.

MAYFLIES USA – “BAD ONES”

Now they’ve announced they’ve re-signed with YepRoc, the label that released three of their four original albums, and are working on a new record. “Calling the Bad Ones Home” is a lovely two-minute power pop earworm — they haven’t lost their touch!
