Netflix Chief Talks Unmade David Lynch Series

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has confirmed the long standing rumors that master filmmaker David Lynch was in the middle of crafting a new limited series for Netflix before he passed away.

Posting a tribute to Lynch on Instagram on Friday, he revealed Lynch came to Netflix to pitch a limited series – and the streaming giant jumped on it. He goes on to explain that general life got in the way:

“It was a David Lynch production, so filled with mystery and risks but we wanted to go on this creative ride with this genius. First COVID, then some health uncertainties lead to this project never being produced but we made it clear that as soon as he was able, we were all in… I will always wonder about what he had in mind for us with what would have been his last project.”

Those original rumors (according to Production Weekly and WoR) suggest the project was going by the name “Wisteria,” could’ve starred Lynch regulars Naomi Watts and Laura Dern, and was aiming for thirteen hour-long episodes with an overall budget of $85 million.

Lynch had planned to write and direct all episodes with his “Mulholland Drive” cinematographer Peter Deming also returning. Last year producer Sabrina Sutherland revealed it was called “Unrecorded Night” with the project in pre-production before it was cancelled when the pandemic hit.

Sarandos’ post also spoke about his encounters with Lynch over the years and his love of his work: “David Lynch was an unapologetic genius. He didn’t want you to understand his work. He knew that was impossible and it was part of the ride together. His body of work is remarkable, visionary, bold and artful.”
