Nike's Doernbecher Air Maxes Are Straight Flames (Lightning, Too)

In 2024, Nike pulled back the curtain to its latest Doernbecher Freestyle collection, marking 20 years of the sportswear brand working with the children's hospital and its immensely talented patients. This year's collection included models like Air Jordan 6, Nike Sabrina 2, Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 41, Nike Air Max DN, and Nike Air Max SNDR, all designed by Doernbecher's kids, of course.
The newest Doernbecher Freestyle collection also featured this super fire — more like lightning-hot — Nike Air Max 180 sneaker.
Designed by Ja'Kai Taylor, the Nike Air Max 180 sneaker speaks to the patient's journey with Type 1 Diabetes and his favorite hobbies. Specifically, the Air Max comes with these ombré blue-green underlays, nodding to his love for video games (the colors symbolize when players power up in a game).
The model's smooth black overlays feature these reflective lightning patterns, referencing Taylor's electronic continuous glucose monitor attached to him.
A "Ja'Kai 30" sneaker hits on the heel like you'd catch on a classic soccer jersey (Taylor is a big soccer fan, BTW). At the same time, "T1D" replaces the traditional 180 branding on the tongue, reiterating and bringing awareness to his condition.
As of the sneaker wasn't already – if I may — electric enough, Taylor's Air Max 180 finishes with this bubble Swoosh on the sides. Why? It's a his way of commemorating his juice box obsessions.
The Doernbecher Freestyle collections support a big cause and allows the hospital's patient to tell their stories through fantastic sneaker designs. And I'm not just saying that.
Over the years, Doernbecher children have created some seriously great sneakers, which often sell out as soon as they hit the Nike platform. But sales aside, the impeccable details unraveling their personal journeys really take these sneakers over the top, evident with Jaren Heacock's dragon-inspired Vomeros and Hugo Covarrubias Molina's drippy Jordan 3s. Taylor's Air Maxes are now part of the epic collection.
Taylor's Nike Air Max 180 sneakers are finally dropping on January 25 on Nike's SNKRS app, alongside the rest of the Doernbecher Freestyle collection. As with previous capsules, all proceeds will go directly to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
