This week’s reveal video of the Nintendo Switch 2 has reportedly been viewed over 17 million times in less than 48 hours on its American YouTube channel.
That tracks ahead of the PlayStation 5 hardware reveal in June 2020 which pulled in some 13.3 million views in the same time period, but falls behind the original Switch which did 19.5 million views over the same period.
A Bloomberg report following up the reveal indicates Nintendo has prepared to sell 20 million Switch 2 units in its first year of release.
Though a specific date has yet to be announced, Nintendo is reportedly planning a full reveal of the machine and games on April 2nd. A June date is being rumored for the console’s release.
So far the markets haven’t been particularly impressed. The Wall Street Journal has reported that the reveal was “disappointing” to investors, mostly due to its lack of specifics and similarity to the existing Switch.
Playing it safe has resulted in a share price drop which went down as far as 7.2% before recovering almost half that by end of day.
Meanwhile two former Nintendo of America PR managers have posted about the pre-reveal leaks on YouTube, saying that within Nintendo itself they are “100% sure that they are really mad, to the most severe level…They are very, very, very upset by this.”
Maybe even more upset than them is “Okami” and “Devil May Cry” director Hideki Kamiya who, in a social media post on X, indicated he hoped the leakers were “cursed for the rest of their lives” and should be “crushed as soon as possible”.
