Skeleton Crew Finale/Season Review – Not Bad For A Show Aimed At Kids

Well, here we are with the Skeleton Crew Finale/Season review and ultimately it’s not bad for a show aimed at kids. That’s kinda what I need to always tell myself here. However, regular readers will know I prefer mature and darker content normally. Therefore, my demographic is not what SC is aimed at. Despite that, you’d hope you can enjoy it alongside your kids and that thankfully you can. This is a SPOILER FREE review folks, so not getting into major plot points about how the series ended.

Ultimately, if you’ve been watching along, you know the set up for this finale. So, does anything surprising happen? Not really! If I was to guess some basic plot points from this finale last week I could have, as could anyone. This is a kids show, which means, no dark twist, no cliff-hanger ending and a relatively happy affair. Now for me, it’s all a little too easy. Therefore, we are left with an occasionally funny, usually fun, but not ambitious little show. Skeleton Crew, nor its finale do anything new or particularly interesting sadly.

The best character in the show is, (well it’s SM-33 but since he’s not in it as much as he should be,) Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law). If we are talking about character development throughout the show, then arguably Jod is the only one who has much of any. KB doesn’t seem to change much, Wim perhaps becomes slightly more courageous, Fern and Wim I don’t think change much at all either. Luckily Jod is a pretty well written character with several shades about him. His path is interesting and there is even a small tease that he may return. Law gives a strange look, which to me said ‘I’ve just had a great idea.’

Yet, is this finale just a set up for a second season? No, this is a complete story.

There are many ways a second series could be made of Skeleton Crew. However, it would likely not be the kids trying to get home. The next step for the story seems to be At Attin coming to terms with being part of a wider Galaxy. Maybe some older versions of these kids could star in a new story, but it wouldn’t follow a similar theme at all. Law’s character should definitely come back though and a second season focused on whatever he’s up to next could work. There’s potential for more development of him as a character and he could still go several directions next.

I think my biggest criticism of the finale is that it all feels a little tame and safe. There seemed to be no jeopardy, or you never felt it was real. As for overall series issues, for me we didn’t get enough of the parents development and not all the kids seem changed in anyway. I also think SM-33 was underutilised and hardly even shows up in some episodes. Someone watching that back should be realizing he’s the best one in the show and building up his role a little.

Finale Grade: B

A little too safe and dull outside of when Jude Law is on screen

Season Grade: B

For a show aimed at kids, it often remains fun, rarely drags, and the fact all characters are original means it doesn’t really get anyone angry over lore. However, it’s a kids show. Therefore, it’s enjoyable in a way where I can be doing other things and still pay attention to everything easily. High drama this is not, but, my 10 year old enjoyed it and I enjoyed watching it with her.

Highest grade I gave an episode was A-, lowest was B-, but overall I’m happy with a solid B.
