‘The Capture of the Green River Killer’ Chronicles a 19 Year Hunt [Murder Made Fiction Podcast]

Though most casual true crime fans are familiar with Ted Bundy, many don’t know that during his four-year reign of terror, another serial rapist and murderer hunted women in the Pacific Northwest. For nineteen years, a man known only as the Green River Killer victimized scores of women, dumping their bodies around Washington’s Green River. Due to striking similarities in these cases, an imprisoned Bundy served as a consultant of sorts in the expansive quest to identify this shadowy psychopath.

Gary Ridgway, aka the Green River Killer, confounded police for nearly two decades until DNA evidence allowed a dedicated task force to conclusively link him to a staggering number of murders. 

In the latest episode of Bloody FM’s Murder Made Fiction Podcast, Jenn and Joe dip into the Lifetime Movie vault with Norma Bailey’s The Capture of the Green River Killer.

This sprawling two-part adaptation features split narratives recounting the nineteen years Gary Ridgway spent hunting for victims in Washington State and the task force dedicated to bringing him down. Alongside this story of frustrated law enforcement, a fictionalized character serves as a heartbreaking representation of his 49 confirmed victims.
