China Duty Free Group snaps up pre-departure downtown duty-free contracts in Chengdu and Tianjin
The stores represent a key extension to the Chinese travel retail ecosystem, with China Duty Free Group building on recently-announced contract gains in other cities.
CHINA. China Duty Free Group (CDFG) has captured contracts to operate pre-departure downtown duty-free stores in Chengdu and Tianjin.
CDFG previously bid for and won the rights to manage duty-free stores in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Xi’an and in Fuzhou.
The new pre-departure duty-free stores represent a key extension to the Chinese travel retail ecosystem announced in August and implemented progressively over a three-month period from 1 October.
In Chengdu, CDFG said it had chosen a site at Yanlord Landmark Plaza on Renmin South Road in the city’s central business district.
Of the location, the travel retailer said: “It gathers the commercial essence and cultural landscape of Chengdu and has unique location and resource advantages.
“China Duty Free Group will join hands with Chengdu’s outstanding local state-owned enterprises to establish a joint venture to operate the city’s duty-free shop project.”
In Tianjin, another key economic centre, CDFG has selected a site in the Yanlord Isetan complex, with the store set to represent “a new landmark in consumer experience” in the city.
CDFG noted that Tianjin “has significant advantages in terms of business environment and international trade and investment”.
Of the pre-departure downtown duty-free concept, CDFG added: “The establishment of duty-free shops in the city is an important opportunity for shaping the urban business district, for Chinese culture and [acts as] an incubator for national fashion brands.”
CDFG said it will create a new retail model that fuses tax-paid and duty-free shopping, imported + domestic goods, and offline to online retail. This in turn will “promote the high-quality development of the duty-free industry in Chengdu and Tianjin and contribute to the prosperity of the regional economy”, it added.
The company said previously: “The establishment of downtown duty-free shops is a concrete manifestation of implementing the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s instructions and promoting consumption growth.
“It not only helps to enhance the consumption vitality of the cities and accelerate the construction of international consumption centre locations, but also effectively guides the return of overseas consumption by Chinese people and promotes the consumption by foreign personnel in China.”
*As reported, the nationwide network of stores embraces six existing downtown stores run by China Duty Free Group and the transformation to the new model of CNSC (12) and China Travel Service (Hong Kong) Asset Management Co stores. Alongside Chengdu and Tianjin, downtown duty-free stores are being opened in Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Xi’an (all CDFG), plus Wuhan (Wangfujing) and Changsha.
