Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan,” “The Wrestler”) is in early talks to direct the A24 psychological thriller “Breakthrough” starring Dwayne Johnson.
Rising scribe Zeke Goodman penned the film set in late 1990s Southern California. The story follows an alienated young man who comes under the influence of a motivational guru (Johnson).
The guru’s intoxicating charm masks his morally questionable methods of manipulation and his own concealed darkness. Casting is still underway for the lead role and other supporting parts.
Stacey Sher’s Shiny Penny Productions will produce alongside Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions.
Aronofsky’s most recent film, “Caught Stealing,” is due for release later this year. The filmmaker has also reportedly been in negotiations to helm the “Cujo” remake.
Johnson, who will next be seen playing MMA fighter Mark Kerr in Benny Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine,” is also attached to the short story fitness horror adaptation “Ripped” and Martin Scorsese’s untitled Hawaiian crime film with Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt.
