With the Nintendo Switch 2‘s recent release and Microsoft’s push to bring Xbox games to multiple platforms, it seems the competition is finding new and exciting ways to bring experiences to gamers around the world. Despite these moves, PlayStation doesn’t seem to be troubled by its long-time rivals.

PlayStation is “still the best place to play,” says SIE President and CEO

In the recent Sony presentation titled Game & Network Services Segment Fireside Chat (H/T ResetEra), Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO, Hideaki Nishino, was asked how they will “protect the value” of its console business as the industry shifts towards multiplatform gaming. In short, Nishino explains how it currently brings value to players already, as well as naming the PlayStation console the “best place to play.”

“The PlayStation experience is not just about the gaming console hardware, nor is it just about the content as well,” Nishino said. “It’s an experience in a community that shares this excitement.”

“The value of the PlayStation console is that it is still the best place to play, and is growing its reach in even broader ways,” he continued.

PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst also weighed in on how they determine which of their first-party games go multiplatform. He mentions how “thoughtful” they are with bringing its franchises off consoles, especially its single-player tentpole titles.

“It’s important to realize that we’re really thoughtful about bringing our franchises off console, to reach new audiences, and that we’re taken a very measured, a very deliberate approach in doing that,” said Hulst. “Particularly on the single-player side, our tentpole titles, they’re such a point of differentiation for the PlayStation console.”

The conversation then switches to Nintendo and the recent release of the Switch 2. When asked if the improved console, as well as Nintendo’s improved relationship with third-party publishers, was concerning for SIE, Nishino remarks that the PS5 is designed for a different experience, and that they will attempt to remain the best place to publish and play.

“We believe PS5’s level of performance is required to achieve a great experience on big screens,” says Nishino. “And in this way, we have provided a unique offering to players and creators in this current console generation.”

“Among those platforms, our mission is that we will continue to be best place and to play and to publish,” Nishino continues. “As such, we have empowered our creators to leverage our offering and services to create amazing, unique experience for players, with high engagement and a great monetization opportunities.”

In terms of engaging with a broader audience, Hulst credits franchises Marvel’s Spider-Man, Horizon, and Astro Bot as first-party offerings that reach a “greater range of audiences.”

So, it seems PlayStation isn’t too phased by Nintendo or Microsoft’s presence as it continues to find “new and innovative ways” to bring its experiences to more players.
