“Andor” Finale Tops Nielsen Streaming Charts

When it comes to the Nielsen streaming charts, having your program released via a binge strategy always works better than going for weekly episode releases.

The third-party streamer ranks the most-watched streaming originals, movies and acquired titles in the United States by total minutes viewed – the more new episodes on offer, the greater its chances to hit that Top 10.

That’s why Netflix, with its almost all-binge approach, routinely dominates the charts as titles like “You” and “The Four Seasons” have in recent weeks, whereas other streamers that opt for weekly releases rarely tend to make it. When they do though, it’s impressive.

Disney+ opted for a weekly release with “Daredevil: Born Again,” but that Marvel program failed to make the Top 10 at any point during its run.

With the second season of “Andor” though, the Mouse House went with a different strategy – dropping three episodes per week for four weeks. That appears to have worked well for them.

In its first week on April 21st – 27th, when Episodes 1-3 were available, the show came in 10th on the overall chart with 721 million minutes (mm) watched. It rose to 6th place with 821mm for the week Episodes 4-6 debuted, then 5th place with 830mm for the week Episodes 7-9 did. Now the finale numbers are in with the show taking 1st place for the week of May 12th-18th with 931mm when Episodes 10-12 debuted.

It marks one of the few titles on the overall Top 10 that’s either library titles with no new episodes (“Bluey,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Criminal Minds”) or a Netflix binge title (“You,” “Forever”) or film premiere (“Nonnas”).

The only shows with weekly new episodes that made the May 12th-18th list were HBO’s “The Last of Us” in 7th place with 745mm for its second season’s fifth episode (up from 738mm the prior week), the seventh season finale of the long-running “The Rookie” in eighth place with 696mm, “Poker Face” which made the ‘originals’ list with 492mm, “The Handmaid’s Tale” with 491mm, and “Mobland” with 385mm. These numbers don’t include the network viewing numbers for either “The Last of Us” or “The Rookie” – only their streaming components.

The success of “Andor” had the knock-on effect of lifting “Rogue One” back into the Nielsen’s Top 10 Movies ranking – coming in ninth with 179mm as presumably people jumped over to watching it after wrapping “Andor”.
