Actor/filmmaker Ben Stiller is being eyed to direct a new film reboot of “The Twilight Zone” franchise at Warner Bros. Pictures and Appian Way according to The Insneider.
Stiller is reportedly a fan of the anthology show and previously cited it as an influence on the acclaimed Apple TV+ series “Severance” on which he serves as executive producer and lead director.
The likes of Matt Reeves (“The Batman”) and Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”) took a shot at resurrecting “The Twilight Zone” franchise as a film back in the early 2010s, but neither version got out of development.
In 2017, Paramount revived the property as a series for their then CBS All Access streaming service (later to become the Paramount+ service) with Jordan Peele producing and hosting that show.
Legendary writer/producer Rod Sterling hosted the original 1959-1964 version. The property was then revived as a movie in the early 1980s, as a TV series in the late 1980s, and as a TV series again in 2002 with Forest Whitaker hosting.
The previous film was a four-segment anthology feature remaking some of the most famous episodes of the original series with George Miller, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante and John Landis directing the segments.
The new film will reportedly be just one story, but while his source says Stiller has been aboard for “roughly six months,” the project remains an open writing assignment awaiting a writer to come up with their own take.
Stiller is very booked in the near future though with a fourth “Fockers” film, the 1970s crime drama feature “Bag Man,” and a third season of “Severance” on the way.
