Sometimes after watching a trailer, I’m drawn to the comments section like a moth to a flame. In the case of MUBI’s new film Lurker, the reactions were pure gold. The internet isn’t just hyped, it’s weirdly united in their support of Lurker. A few standout takes:
“This movie ain’t that dark though, it’s FUNNY. We at Sundance be loling the whole time.”
“Friendship — but creepy AF.”
“Do we really need another Tumblr-ified Mr. Ripley?”
Honestly? I kind of love all of that.
From what I can gather from the trailer, Lurker has that twisted, uncomfortable vibe — the kind that gets under your skin and stays there. It gave me subtle Mysterious Skin energy, if Mysterious Skin starred a younger, more social-media-obsessed cast. The docu-style visuals look sharp too intimate, handheld, and unsettling in the right way.
Rolling Stone calls it Nightcrawler for the social media generation, and that tracks. Nightcrawler was a deliciously dark descent into obsession and exploitation. If Lurker is anything like that, but through a Gen Z lens? I’m in.

The film is starting to roll out select screenings. Might be smart to snag a ticket before this thing fully blows up.
