A planned screening of the ‘Schumacher cut’ of 1995’s “Batman Forever” for this coming Thursday has been cancelled.

Website and YouTube channel 1995 Batman, which is dedicated to the Joel Schumacher-directed feature, says they had planned the free screening to take place at Cinefile Video.

However the theater received a cease and desist from Warner Bros. after news of the screening made headlines. The site says:

“The management did the best they could but they had no way to fight it and had to cancel the screening. The theatre weren’t making money off showing the workprint but it’s clear that Warner saw things a bit different.”

In 2023, select viewers in the U.S. got the chance to see Schumacher’s original version of “Batman Forever”. The rough cut, which requires a few million dollars worth of further work in visual effects and musical scoring, clocked in at 158 minutes. It reportedly boasts a more deliberate pacing and a deeper exploration of Bruce Wayne’s psychology.

Response to what was shown has been positive, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman saying back in 2023 in the wake of Schumacher’s passing: “Releasing his cut would be a nice way to honor him. I think he would’ve really appreciated that.”

Warners has made no indications of plans to finish and release the director’s cut of the film.
