Folks it seems like Madame Web, the movie which destroyed the SSMU, actually had loads of MCU references originally. I’ve labelled this Barside Buzz because we have one rumor from Daniel RPK and I cannot verify the images I share below are legit. In this AI era, you never know?
Let’s start with Daniel, he claims that the original plan for Madame Web had Tom Holland. The original concept it seems was like a Terminator kind of deal, where the gang were protecting Peter Parker’s mother so he could be born. Now cutting all this out would explain some of why the movie ended up so bad it was nearly unintelligible.
If you remember, Sony has done this before. Using their own assets like Michael Keaton’s Vulture to make it appear to casual fans like Sony’s Marvel movies were set in the same Universe as the MCU. For actual fans that understood, it was so blatant I called it out many times in the past. Things is, it actually did work initially and Sony’s poor movies got more bums on seats than they should have.
Even stars were signed on thinking they were joining the MCU. Gotta blame their own agents for that one. However, Madame Web was so bad, and the audience too switched on, to fall for it. It effectively destroyed Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

We actually have potentially some more evidence for Sony’s plans. One individual has posted images on Reddit they claim show a popcorn bucket that was designed and shipped in boxes. They said the instruction to not open the boxes only came after he had opened them. The he says word came down they were not being used at all.
To be fair, if these are legit below, then Sony would have had to get direct permission from Disney. With the likes of Drax, (shown) Captain Marvel and Thanos referenced. Maybe they hoped to get away with it, or a deal of some kind between the studios fell through?
Or, this could all be fake, so grain of salt here folks. I have a feeling they are legit, but I can’t guarantee that.
A look at the cancelled Madame Web cinema cup that features references to Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel), Thanos and The Green Goblin.

I’ll point out Green Goblin is irrelevant here as Sony can use him all they like.
So what do you think of Madame Web originally having loads of MCU references? Did Disney shut it down? Were Sony seriously trying to fool people their movies were MCU for a quick buck? Thoughts below.
