HBO Reveals “The Last of Us” S2 Ratings

It has taken time but HBO has finally issued the first official ratings figures for “The Last of Us” Season 2 since the premiere and, like the show’s storyline about different perspectives, they’re both good and bad depending on what you’re looking at.

On one side the season finale, releasing on a Memorial Day holiday weekend as well as alongside the NBA finals, and undermined by an online leak of the full episode earlier in the week, pulled in 3.7 million U.S. viewers across all platforms on Sunday night (Live + Same Day).

That’s a 30% drop from the 5.3 million U.S. viewers in Live + Same Day that tuned into the season premiere and a larger drop from the 8.2 million U.S. viewers in Live + Same Day who tuned into the first season finale.

The network adds that they expect there to be significant growth after the holiday weekend for the episode.

While the U.S. live viewership is seemingly down, the network says the second season overall is outperforming the first season – and not by a slim margin either.

The first season averaged 32 million viewers per episode after 90 days of viewing, the largest audience for an HBO and Max debut season ever.

At the 43-day mark though, the second season is already averaging 37 million viewers per episode and rising – where it will stand by the 90 day mark we’ll find out in mid-July.

As for the overall health of the entire series, the network has also revealed the series has so far received over 90 million total viewers since Season 1 ended.

Also today, series star Bella Ramsey has confirmed to Variety she’s likely not going to appear much next season: “I haven’t seen any scripts, but yes, I do expect that., I think that I’m going to be there, but not a whole bunch. We’ve had conversations about that. I sort of have a rough idea of what it’s going to be, but I can’t tell you.”
