Some disappointing news broke last night that The Wheel of Time is cancelled at Amazon after just three seasons. I’m loathe to tag a specific trade, as they all ran the news, though I believe Deadline were first off the block.
It’s disappointing, because Season 3 was one of the highest rated fantasy seasons of TV, second only behind Game of Thrones Season 4. However, perhaps the damage was really done in Season 1 by Amazon themselves. From unpopular story changes they insisted on, to slashing the budget and the episode count from 10 to 8 just before filming. There were also some issues with Season 1 not down to Amazon, including COVID and a main actor leaving during it.
The result was a weak end to a relatively average opening season. However, from Season 2 on, the quality began to improve and this continued into Season 3, which was critically acclaimed.
Did Amazon Want It To Succeed?
Perhaps though, Amazon wanted the show to fail after Season 1 didn’t suddenly become a monster hit? That’s how the industry is now days. Season 2 was almost ignored by Amazon in terms of marketing. It was so bad that months later there were still fans of Season 1 turning up online shocked they found it by accident.
Season 3 was marketed a little better but still a drop in the ocean compared to the likes of Rings of Power.
As a book fan who was able to accept a more faithful adaptation was impossible and unnecessary, I’m sad. I know some fans seem to think the show can now be rebooted as a 14 season show costing millions. Folks, that won’t happen in my lifetime, not in this climate.
The truth is that whilst Game of Thrones brought us into what should have been a golden age of fantasy on TV, the studios ruined it all. Rings of Power is a disgrace for the money spent, The Witcher was made progressively worse each season, and even House of the Dragon made questionable second season choices. The rest were not even worth mentioning.
However, after that shaky start, The Wheel of Time was damn good. But add it all up and studios are just done with fantasy as a genre, again.
Any Hope?
Some fans are hoping that Apple TV will swoop in and save the series. However, they’ve never done anything like this before. The truth is it won’t probably make them enough money to bother. Not unless someone at Apple is a fan. I think we can probably discount any other streamer, all currently struggling to cut costs and get back to making affordable TV. I’d love to see it myself, don’t get me wrong. Apple make by far the best shows ratio wise from their catalogue.
I’ve also cancelled by Amazon Prime. As much as I like the free delivery, I think Amazon are one of the worst studios out there right now. I therefore refuse to support it. I just recently let my Apple sub go. However, I’d re-up if they picked up this show, alongside many others I enjoy but am caught up with.

But the truth is, it probably won’t happen. The best chance we have of this book series being adapted now is an animated series. Even then, I think this is a story that people will have to read the books to fully appreciate.
Such a shame, and TV is in such a state. I’ve let go of all but Disney+ now, though I will pick up Apple when some new series hit. Reading some comments about Andor has made me realise people don’t want stories anymore. They want something simple and uniform so they can half watch it whilst they browse social media getting misinformed. Sad times, sad times.
What do you think of the news that The Wheel of Time is cancelled at Amazon after only three seasons? Thoughts below.
