Ever since playing Starkiller back in “The Force Unleashed” games, actor Sam Witwer has had a long-running connection to the “Star Wars” universe – most visibly with the role of Darth Maul on the “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” animated series.
He reprises the role again for the upcoming Disney+ series “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord” which was first unveiled last month at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo.
The other week, Witwer made an appearance on The Sackhoff Show and was asked about what we can expect from the upcoming series. Witwer wanted to make it clear that while the series will go into the character’s more emotional side, he won’t be a good guy all of a sudden:
“It’s about bad guys vs worse guys…This isn’t going to be a show where you find out Maul is a real teddy bear, man…We’re not doing that…but is he as bad as Sidious or Vader? Actually no…from the Sith perspective, this guy has flaws…[there’s] humanity that seeps in at various points…because of things that have happened to him.
Witwer adds the show will also see Maul questioning what the Emperor’s plans are now that he’s seeing the birth of the Empire:
“[Maul’s] like, ‘Is that what [Sidious] had in mind? This is a little scary’. Maul comes from a time of swords, sorcery, magic and knights, and now all of that color of the universe is being sucked out of this mechanized Empire. And Maul’s like, ‘Is this right? Is this the universe we were trying to build?’”
It’s said the series takes place around one year after the events of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and in the earliest days of the Empire – around 19 BBY. The series has yet to set its release plans but is expected out sometime next year on the Disney+ service.
