22 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

U.S. GIRLS – “LIKE JAMES SAID”

The second single from U.S. Girls’ upcoming Scratch It is an ode to the healing power of dance. As is the video, which was directed and performed by comedian Tom Henry who says, “When Meg talked to me about making some sort of video about this song that talks about dancing, I had a sudden bolt of inspiration – how about a video about dancing? I don’t know how these ideas come to me. To me, this character has a story, but ultimately, I just think someone trying to do something well, who doesn’t fully have the faculties to do that, is funny and interesting, and possibly sad – the two and a half things I want to be as a comedian. That’s why I got my dancer friend, Gillian, to help put together this dance piece and attempted to perform it as best I could. I hope, above all else, everyone finds it breathtakingly beautiful, and that I win an award.”

DUMMY – “ETHEREAL SECURITY GUARD”

LA band Dummy will release Dumb EPs this summer, a more experimental batch of songs than last year’s Free Energy. This one is mostly drone, but great song title!

HOTLINE TNT – “BREAK RIGHT”

Hotline TNT strip things back for their latest Raspberry Moon single. “Every effect has been unplugged, every sample has been deprogrammed and every emotion has been laid bare,” bandleader Will Anderson says. “You’ve never heard a Hotline song quite like this before.”

GREET DEATH – “MOTHERFUCKER”

Greet Death have shared a somber, moody new single from Die In Love.

SMUT – “TOUCH & GO”

Smut’s new album Tomorrow Comes Crashing is out next month, and they’ve given us another preview with “Touch & Go.” Vocalist and lyricist Tay Roebuck calls it “a broken fantasy that was pretty directly inspired by ‘Time to Pretend’ by MGMT. The pursuit of success and the daydreams we have of ‘making it’ are pretty easily shattered once you put that fantasy in the modern world. The song ends with the realization that the best part of music will always be the community you build with it.”

RUNNNER – “ACHILLES AND”

Noah Weinman has announced a new Runnner album, A Welcome Kind of Weakness, due August 29 via Run For Cover. It features recent singles “Coinstar,” “Spackle,” and “Chamomile,” as well as the breezy alt-rock of new single “Achilles And.”

HISTAMINE – “POISON II (MIRACLE CURE)”

Australian hardcore punks Histamine will release their debut LP Quality of Life on June 27 via Convulse/Last Ride, and lead single “Poison II (Miracle Cure)” is fast-paced and venomous.

MATT JENCIK (DON CAB, SLINT) & MIDWIFE – “DELETE KEY”

The haunting ambient pop artist Midwife is releasing a collaborative album with Matt Jencik (of Implodes, Don Caballero, Slint’s live band, Circuit Des Yeux, and more) called Never Die on July 11 via Relapse. If you like Midwife (or Grouper, or the new Ethel Cain album), you’ll probably like lead single “Delete Key.”

ITHACA – “ITHACA”

UK metalcore band Ithaca will play their final show at this year’s ArcTanGent festival, and they’re also saying goodbye with this eponymous single.

AGONIZE (ex-VATICAN) – HIGHEST FORM EP & “ALL THE WAY THROUGH” VIDEO

Savannah metalcore band Vatican broke up in 2022 and members formed Agonize, who just dropped a kickass five-song EP and a music video for “All the Way Through” via Closed Casket Activities.

ZOH AMBA – “FRUIT GATHERING”

Baritone saxophonist Zoh Amba has announced new album Sun which will be out June 27 via Smalltown Supersound. It features Caroline Morton (bass), Lex Korton (piano) and Miguel Marcel Russel (percussion). “We spent days just playing together, and I was trying to mentally take notes of what naturally wanted to exist in this band – before giving instructions or handing out sheet music,” Amba says. “I wanted to see where we were all standing in life, right at that moment. From there, I started carving out the process with them.”

THESE NEW PURITANS – “WILD FIELDS”

“‘Wild Fields’ is a bit of an outlier on the album, in that it’s quite a traditional song,” says These New Puritans’ Jack Barnett. “It ends with the words “come down from crystal heavens above,” which is a quotation from William Byrd’s lament for Thomas Tallis. When I googled it to check the reference, it just showed me endless advice about crystal meth withdrawal. Those are the only ads I see now. So this song has a lot to answer for.” New album Crooked Wing is out this week.

FOR THOSE I LOVE – “OF THE SORROWS”

For Those I Love, aka Irish producer David Balfe, is back with his first new music in four years — a song that falls somewhere between The Streets and shoegave. “When I wrote Of The Sorrows,’ it felt like I was bargaining with myself, Balfe says. “It was one of the first songs I’d written to myself, for myself, while still trying to embody the feelings and thoughts of my closest peers. At its heart,’Of The Sorrows’ is about a city rapidly boxing you out, and the choices you make in order to stay.”

STEREOLAB – “TRANSMUTED MATTER”

Here’s one last taste of Stereolab’s first album in 15 years before the whole thing drops on Friday.

LAURA STEVENSON – “HONEY”

Laura Stevenson announced her seventh album and shared the lead single, which you can read more about here.

WINTER – “JUST LIKE A FLOWER”

The first single from Winter’s new album mixes delicate janglepop with Dinosaur Jr-style sludge.

WOMBO – “DANGER IN FIVES”

Here’s the first single and title track from Wombo’s upcoming album Danger in Fives

HUNX AND HIS PUNX – “ALONE IN HOLLYWOOD ON ACID”

TURNSTILE – “LOOK OUT FOR ME”

Turnstile have shared a remarkable new single from Never Enough, a nearly-seven-minute song with big riffs, a shoutalong hook, an IDM break, and a sample of The Wire. Read more about it here.

ANAND WILDER (YEASAYER) – “APPOINTMENT IN SAMARRA”

Yeasayer co-leader Anand Wilder has shared a trippy new solo single that you can read about here.
