Two major movie juggernauts debuted last night ahead of the Memorial Day weekend, and so far, they’re going great.

Disney’s live-action take on their 2002 animated classic “Lilo & Stitch” pulled in around $14 million in previews, while the Christopher McQuarrie-directed final “Mission: Impossible” film landed around $8 million.

For ‘Lilo’, it’s potentially a Disney record for Memorial Day weekend previews – depending upon final numbers pushing it past the $14.1 million that “Solo: A Star Wars Story” previews pulled in seven years ago.

At present, the common estimate is that by the end of the four-day holiday haul, the new “Lilo & Stitch” will generate around $150 million domestically.

Disney’s biggest opening to date for the Memorial Day weekend was 2007’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” which raked in $139.8 million by end of Monday.

As for ‘Mission,’ if the $8 million preview number holds it will be a record preview night for any film in the franchise. The film is tracking for a four-day haul of around $75-85 million, and is expected to beat the “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” three-day start of $61 million.

“Lilo & Stitch” and “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” combined are expected to generate nearly half a billion in global theatrical business by the end of the long weekend.
