Ejiofor, Milioti Circling A24’s “The Backrooms”

Chiwetel Ejiofor and Cristin Milioti are in talks to star in the online-inspired horror flick “The Backrooms” at A24, Chernin Entertainment, James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps.

Kane Parsons created the original “The Backrooms (Found Footage)” viral video which originated in 2019 on a 4chan thread about unsettling images.

The urban legend and ‘creepypasta’ short film is set in the 1990s and sees a young filmmaker fall into another dimension where he wanders through an unsettlingly yellow, empty and labyrinthine office space – one that may be home to otherworldly beings.

Shot found footage style, it has clocked in nearly 100 million views and has subsequently inspired various creative works online including indie video game “Escape the Backrooms”.

Parsons will direct the film from a script by Roberto Patino. Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine will produce for 21 Laps, along with James Wan and Michael Clear for Atomic Monster, and Patino.

Ejiofor will next be seen in “The Life of Chuck” in cinemas next month, The Old Guard 2″ on Netflix in July, and is in Scarlett Johansson’s just premiered at Cannes film “Eleanor the Great”.

Milioti is coming off of rave reviews for her work in Max’s “The Penguin” and in the “USS Calister: Into Infinity” episode of “Black Mirror” on Netflix.
