Global Hotel Alliance (GHA) launched its first Discovery Dollars (D$) sale past year and has a new offer for purchases made between May 29 and June 19, 2025.

There are a few issues with buying D$:

You can use them towards prepaid rates only at hotels that allow using them during the booking process
You only earn points for the amount after D$ has been applied.
You cannot use D$ to settle taxes/fees (only the base rate)
They expire in 24 months.
There is no arbitrage opportunity as redeeming is entirely dynamic (D$1 = $1)

Conclusion

Terms and Conditions of this promotion:

The Buy D$ Promotion (the “Promotion”) is a limited-time offer available from 29 May 2025 to 19 June 2025 GST (the “Promotional Period”), allowing all GHA DISCOVERY Members (the “Eligible GHA DISCOVERY Members”) to purchase DISCOVERY Dollars (“D$”).
“D$” is the rewards currency of the GHA DISCOVERY loyalty programme; they are rewards points and not a legal currency in any territory. They do not have any intrinsic value. D$ can be used towards the payment of eligible stay charges at any GHA DISCOVERY hotel, with each D$ being equivalent to a credit of USD 1 against the stay charges. D$ cannot be redeemed on ineligible charges, such as rates booked through an Online Travel Agent or Wholesaler.
Purchased D$ will be awarded to the GHA DISCOVERY membership account provided during the transaction process. D$ purchased under this offer are subject to a limited expiry term of twenty-four (24) months from the date of issuance.
The retail price per one (1) D$ in this Promotion is USD 0.85 for all Eligible Members, regardless of their tier. The minimum purchase amount for all tiers is D$10. The limit of D$ purchased within this Promotion in a single or multiple transactions is D$5,000 for all tiers.
The D$ purchase transaction is hosted on a partner platform, Points.com, with transaction and payment processing Terms and Conditions available here. The transactions are processed in the US Dollar currency for all members. Any currency exchange rate, foreign transaction fee and additional fees are determined solely by the payment instrument’s issuer and not by Points or GHA.
Once payment is successfully submitted, purchased D$ will be reflected on the Member’s GHA DISCOVERY membership account and will be confirmed by email. D$ purchases cannot be reversed or refunded.
