The rumors are true – “Ex Machina,” “Annihilation” and “Civil War” writer/director Alex Garland will direct A24’s live-action film adaptation of Bandai Namco and FromSoftware’s award-winning video game “Elden Ring”.
Nexus Point News broke the story a few weeks back, but took it down shortly after. The Verge slammed the outlet, but scooper Jeff Sneider confirmed the original report was correct.
Cut to just over two weeks later and now the trades are confirming it with Variety indicating Garland will also write the upcoming feature.
The game was a massive hit, reportedly shipping over 30 million copies since its launch back in 2022 where it took Game of the Year at the Game Awards. Created in collaboration with “Game of Thrones” author George R. R. Martin, it unfolds in a world called The Lands Between.
Players take on the role of one of the Tarnished, individuals whose ancestors were exiled years ago. When the Elden Ring is shattered, they get the chance to return and conquer the land they were once banished from.
The film will be produced by Peter Rice alongside Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, Martin and Vince Gerardis.
The news comes a week ahead of the new co-op game spin-off “Elden Ring Nightreign” releasing in stores on May 30th.
