Dezeen Showroom: design studio SmithMatthias has created a foam-free modular sofa for British brand Morgan that provides a sustainable sofa option for the contract market.

Seating designed for contract environments often has a harsh and clinical feel, so Morgan released the Bruton modular sofa as a softer, more domestic alternative.

At the same time, the design studio avoided petroleum-based foam, instead coming up with a layered composition of natural materials including wool, coconut coir, pocket springs and feathers.

"With Bruton, we've pushed traditional upholstery materials, such as springs and wool, to their limits, redeﬁning their use in a contemporary way," said SmithMatthias co-founder Gemma Matthias.

"This innovative approach brings us full circle, using heritage techniques to drive modern design," Matthias continued.

The Bruton sofa system includes single- and two-seater modules as well as an inline coffee table and ottomans. A standalone chaise longue and two-seater sofa are also available.
