Over the weekend, it was announced that Discover’s merger with Capital One had been completed as of 5/18/25. Discover Bank is now officially part of Capital One, N.A., though not much appears to be changing in the near term from the customer perspective.
Both when this merger was originally announced and now that it has been completed, many cardholders from both banks wondered what (if any) change this will mark with regard to credit card offerings, rewards, etc.
At least for the time being, nothing significant is changing. According to the credit card Frequently Asked Questions page, Discover accounts will continue to function as-is. Cardholders will continue to log in through the Discover website/app, rewards and benefits will remain as-is, payments will continue to function the same, and it will still be possible to apply for Discover products.
The most significant changes are that your cardholder agreement will now officially be with Capital One and balance transfers between Discover and Capital One are no longer allowed (and if you scheduled one recently but it hadn’t yet posted, it may be rejected). Otherwise, the FAQs make it sound like everything is business as usual for now.
As expected, there is no way to share rewards between Discover cards and Capital One cards and the Discover IT Miles program will continue to function as-is (which is to say that Discover IT miles are not becoming transferable, though we could obviously see an eventual change there).
Overall, no news is good news for those who have been nervous about the merger.
