Film Exec Poll: Cinemas To Die Before 2045?

A new poll conducted by analyst and author Stephen Follows has spoken with over 240 U.S. based film industry executives about their opinion on the theatrical industry’s recovery after the pandemic.

The survey covered a major range of topics from release windowing to the future of the industry amidst the rise of streaming and younger generations for whom cinema is less important thanks to a much larger range of entertainment options.

The biggest reveal is that around 55% of executives in the poll believe that the “traditional moviegoing” experience will no longer be a viable business model sometime within the next 20 years. That percentage includes those who answered Under 5 Years, 5-10 years and 10-20 years.

However it varies between which area the execs specialised in. Those in sales, distribution and production executives had much bleaker views for cinema’s future overall than those in the actual theatrical exhibition sector or even TV executives, but it was exhibition execs who had the largest ‘under 5 years’ percentage of all.

Others consider IMAX and 4DX style premium large-format auditoriums separate experiences from the ‘traditional cinema experience’ and so don’t count that towards the total.

The poll also found that nearly 90% of U.S. exhibition executives have confirmed their revenue has not recovered to pre-COVID levels, 81% want exclusive theatrical windows of at least six weeks, and that 77% believe day-and-date streaming releases have hurt the theatrical model.
