Gunn On “Sgt. Rock” Delay, Creative Changes

Back in late April came the news that celebrated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino’s film adaptation of the DC Comics title “Sgt. Rock” was essentially dead.

The project had been in pre-production ahead of a planned shoot in England starting in July with Colin Farrell to play the eponymous WW2 soldier and hero while Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”), Mike Faist (“Challengers”) and David Jonsson (“Alien Romulus”) would have supporting roles.

Then conflicting reports emerged suggesting a potential reassessment to shoot next Summer, as did ones about what scuttled the project this year – from concern over Guadagnino’s lack of experience in action films, to scheduling issues.

Now. DC Studios chief James Gunn has weighed in with EW and says the film might still happen. As for why it didn’t happen this year, he says it was due to the overall vision of the project not being up to his standards:

“I feel like we’re in a pretty good place. We’re still moving forward, but it’s not going to be…What would Peter want me to say here? … So it’s still moving forward, but, yeah, right now it wasn’t exactly where I wanted it to be creatively, and so it needs to change a little bit.”

Gunn stated recently he killed a project because he didn’t think the script was where it needed to be, and it sounds like this is the one he was referring to.

Justin Kuritzkes penned the film which previously was reported as involving a race to nab the mystical Spear of Destiny before the Nazi’s retrieve it. Composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross were also attached to the project prior to its stalling.
