Gunn Talks “Clayface” Rating, Script Changes

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has cleared up reports about the “Clayface” film, specifically in regards to Mike Flanagan’s script, which got the project going in the first place.

Flanagan penned the film, which is said to be heavily inspired by the “Batman: The Animated Series” two-part episode ‘Feat of Clay’ that introduced the character.

Following that script getting the project the green light, Flanagan’s commitments to the “Carrie” series remake made him unavailable to direct so James Watkins (“Speak No Evil”) came onboard to helm.

At the same time, Hossein Amini (“Drive”) was slated to rewrite the script. How much he re-wrote has been a major question with some claiming it to be a ground up script overhaul – that seems unlikely. Asked how much of Mike’s story is going to be kept, he responded on Threads:

“Huh? It’s all Mike’s story. That’s WHY we’re making this movie, because we loved it. Any changes as the shooting script is finalized are minor.”

Gunn also appeared on the DC Studis Showcase podcast and says the film is aiming for an R-rating:

“I mean, it’s not anything now, because the MPA has to watch it. But it’s most likely rated R. It’s pretty intense. Clayface was not on our [initial] checklist. But Mike [Flanagan] came in with a pitch for Clayface that was like, ‘Whoa. That is so cool.’

Then he wrote the screenplay and fulfilled doubly on that promise. The thing about Clayface that’s so cool is that Peter [Safran] and I, back when we were producing horror movies = The Belko Experiment, all these things – I’m like, ‘If we had gotten the script as a horror movie, not being part of the DCU at all.’

It’s like this amazing body horror film that we would jump at the chance to make. It’s just a great horror movie that is a great, smart, fun, fun horror movie in a genre that I happen to love, body horror.”

Gunn, Safran, Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris are producing “Clayface” which will star Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries in the lead role. The film will shoot shortly ahead of a September 11th 2026 release.
