Hilton last year partnered with Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH), which partnership with Hyatt ended when they (Hyatt) purchased Mr & Mrs Smith.

Roughly 75% of all SLH hotels are also part of the Hilton Honors partnership, which continues to expand.

This “to the next-best available room type as determined at time of check-in” essentially means one category upgrade, based on availability, which may not be significant at hotels with numerous room categories.

Conclusion

How these independent SLH hotels upgrade Gold and Diamond members must vary a lot. The program’s Terms and Conditions now clearly state that the upgrade benefit, if available, is only to the next category of room, whereas previously, this was not specified.

I wish Hilton would put these SLH hotels at the end of the search for any specific city, as I have no desire to stay at them beyond perhaps redeeming points at some very high-end properties.

You should also keep in mind that you can usually book these same hotels at a much lower price through an OTA or SLH.

Stays booked through any channel other than Hilton, including those done on SLH’s website, are not eligible for Honors credit.
