When the first set photos of David Corenswet in costume shooting James Gunn’s “Superman” hit, it caused a wave of reaction. A common complaint was that the suit seemed ‘baggy’ and rather ill-fitting. When actual footage came out those complaints slightly subsided.
Even so, there’s the impression that the suit was a more ‘relaxed fit’ for the actor. That’s not the case, says Corenswet who tells People that squeezing into it was an “intense experience” as an actor:
“It was quite snug because they had made it to my proportions when I screentested where I weighed about 195 pounds, and when I walked in for my first costume fitting, I weighed about 235, 240 pounds.
You hear actors who play superheroes talking about squeezing into the suits. I got kind of claustrophobic in the suit the first time, just being constricted in all those places at the same time.”
He adds that the outfit has a lot of zippers on it, but not a single one that allows for quick bathroom access. Asked if it was an issue, he says: “Not at all. I never had an issue with that.”
He adds that his “amazing” dresser Scott R. Hankins helped with that, calling him a ‘mob fixer’ who always had his back:
“He would make excuses for me if I needed, and we got very good together at getting in and out of the suit, so he would do it quite quickly, and I could take breaks if I needed to over the course of a day.”
“Superman” is slated to hit cinemas on July 11th.
