As the global travel landscape becomes increasingly complex, influenced by climate change, environmental concerns, and evolving traveller expectations, destinations in the Middle East are taking proactive steps to adapt their tourism strategies. By focusing on resilience, innovation, and long-term sustainability, the region is effectively tackling challenges such as extreme weather, shifting consumer behaviours, and geopolitical pressures.

The Middle East has emerged as a leader in tourism recovery, with international tourist arrivals in 2024 reaching 1.4 billion, according to UN Tourism. This represents a near-total rebound to pre-pandemic levels, with a notable 11% increase over 2023. The region has outpaced the global recovery, recording arrivals that are 32% higher than in 2019, positioning it as the fastest-recovering region in the world.

At the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025, experts gathered at the session on “Redefining Tourism Products in Uncertain Times,” organized in partnership with the Global Travel & Tourism Resilience Council. The session explored how the Middle East is innovating to ensure traveller safety, preserve cultural and environmental assets, and enhance its appeal as a resilient, forward-thinking destination.

Ghada Shalaby, Executive Director of the Egyptian Hotel Association, highlighted Egypt’s adaptive strategies: “Over the past decade, Egypt has faced several challenges, and we tailored our approach to both tour operators and end consumers, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when we communicated our health and safety measures. By the end of 2023, we saw a significant rebound in tourist arrivals, which continued into 2024.”

The cruise industry also made significant strides in sustainability. During a high-level session on the ATM 2025 Global Stage, cruise experts discussed the sector’s commitment to the environment. They emphasized that modern ships operate under some of the strictest environmental regulations in the tourism industry, particularly in sensitive regions like the Red Sea. The discussion also addressed the role of media, noting how perceptions influenced by coverage and travel advisories can misrepresent conditions on the ground and impact travel decisions.

Ibrahim Osta, Global Tourism Lead at Chemonics International, commented on the role of media: “What the media reports has an impact on interest in a destination and the willingness of tourists to visit. This makes the work of tourism authorities much more challenging.”

The session also highlighted how perceptions of instability, often amplified by social media and outdated advisories, can affect demand for insurance. Experts stressed the importance of collaborative storytelling, investing in green infrastructure, and attracting new source markets by offering diverse experiences and cross-border itineraries.

Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME at Arabian Travel Market, noted: “ATM serves as a crucial platform for cross-sector dialogue, especially on issues that affect the future of travel in complex environments. By bringing together experts from insurance, hospitality, development, and the cruise industry, we are contributing to building a more connected and resilient tourism ecosystem in the Middle East and beyond.”

As the Middle East continues to innovate and collaborate, it is positioning itself as a key player in the future of global tourism, ensuring long-term sustainability and growth in a rapidly changing world.
