Cruise On “Maverick,” “Thunder” Sequel Plans

With the “Mission: Impossible” franchise coming to an end with this week’s ‘Final Reckoning,’ the franchise’s star Tom Cruise is already looking towards other franchises of his as future projects.

Speaking with the Today Show Australia, Cruise confirms he and his team are “working on” potential sequels to both the recent “Top Gun: Maverick” and his 1990 racing drama “Days of Thunder”.

“Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible. It took me 35 years to figure out ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing ‘Days of Thunder’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’

There’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now. I’m always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film. I just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, who did ‘The Revenant,’ and we’ll be coming out with that. That was an extraordinary experience and [‘Mission: Impossible’ director Christopher McQuarrie] and I are always working on several different films.”

Cruise recently finished that Inarritu film and is said to be already preparing to shoot the undersea thriller “Deeper” with filmmaker Doug Liman. That follows an aquanaut who encounters a terrifying force while on a deep dive into a never-before-explored trench.

Cruise also has his space-set action film in development, along with McQuarrie’s own WW2 film “Broadsword” which follows a marine captain and sole survivor of a crash in occupied France.

“Days of Thunder 2” was first teased back in November with producer Jerry Bruckheimer also in discussions to return, while a third “Top Gun” has been floated about ever since the massive success of “Top Gun: Maverick”. Ehren Kruger is expected to pen the script for that.
