Finnair hasn’t only cancelled 110 flights scheduled tomorrow due to strike activity by various employee groups (read more here), but now there is an additional issue with catering.
Short-haul flights, which can be up to 6 to 7 hours long, are not catered beyond water and cookies in economy, and coffee and tea are also available in business.
You can access Finnair here.
We have been in touch with Finnair to see what compensation business class passengers can expect in terms of Avios, credits, or refunds when Food and beverage options are not available. These are significant parts of the in-flight experience in Europe, as the seat is exactly the same as in economy. No reply as of yet.
Finnair’s Announcement:
Limited meal & beverage service onboard 19-20 May
Due to the situation, the in-flight sales is not available and catering will be limited on our domestic and European flights between 19 and 20 May. We recommend bringing snacks for your flight. In Economy Class, we serve water and a complimentary cookie. In Business Class, you will also be offered coffee and tea in addition to water and the cookie. Unfortunately, Business Class meals and pre-ordered meals cannot be delivered. If you have already purchased a meal, you can apply for a refund. On our intercontinental flights, you can enjoy meals as part of our standard service, as usual.
Conclusion
Finnair won’t even automatically refund preordered meals that economy passengers have ordered and paid for; passengers must apply for refunds, which can take months to process.
This has to be illegal. You collect the cash, but don’t provide the service, yet the burden falls on passengers to seek refunds. Not good.
I guess that Finnair tries to ensure that their long-haul flights are catered for these two days.
Business class passengers should seek compensation for the F&B that was not provided during these flights.
