Veteran “Duck Dynasty” producer Rob Worsoff has pitched a reality television show which the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is reportedly considering according to THR, The Daily Mail and The Wall Street Journal.
Titled “The American,” the series would put immigrants through a series of challenges as they compete for fast-tracked U.S. citizenship.
Contestants would compete in regionally specific ‘cultural’ contests like rolling logs in Wisconsin and assembling a Model T in Detroit. In the finale, the winner would get sworn in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol.
In a posting on his Facebook page on Friday, Worsoff dismisses suggestions of this being “‘The Hunger Games’ for immigrants,” saying: “It’s not mean spirited. Instead, ‘The American’ is a celebration of what it means to be… well… American – At a time when our morale is at an all-time low.”
In a statement to THR from Homeland’s public affairs assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin, they confirm the show is being reviewed:
“The Department of Homeland Security receives hundreds of television show pitches a year, ranging from documentaries surrounding ICE and CBP border operation to white collar investigations by HSI. Each proposal undergoes a thorough vetting process prior to denial or approval.”
She adds they are in “the beginning stages of that vetting process” in regards to “The American”. She also denied a report in the British tabloids that Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem is pushing the project, saying Noel has yet to be briefed on the initiative.
Worsoff, a Canadian immigrant, says the project lends itself to enormous corporate sponsorship opportunities. He also indicates he had pitched the show during former President Obama and Biden’s administrations.
