Current DCU boss and former MCU filmmaker James Gunn comments on how the MCU suffered due to corporate demands for more content. Speaking with Rolling Stone, Gunn commented on how the MCU has suffered, and fallen off its perch in recent years. Gunn laid the blame at former Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s push for more content to sell Disney+, at the expense of quality control.
“[Longtime Marvel executive producer] Louis [D’Esposito] said [they put out too much stuff] privately to me. I don’t even know if it’s really their fault. That wasn’t fair. It wasn’t right. And it killed them.”
Look at the money spent on Secret Invasion, then look at the final product.
Now since then, Gunn seems to have come under a bit of fire for using the term ‘killed them’. With some fans assuming Gunn thinks the MCU is now dead as a franchise. To be honest, I think this is just one of those situations we get these days, where fans reading comprehension isn’t good.
However, Gunn did clarify his statements later on through his Threads account.
“To be clear – & as IS clear in the context of the interview- I didn’t say “it killed them” like they’re over but they were screwed by the situation they had no control over. They’re on the other side of that now, which is good. “

I think Marvel are definitely through the period of being pushed to fill space no matter the quality. However, it remains to be seen whether the franchise can ever recapture the magic it has till Avengers: Endgame. Yes, the plan is to make good movies and only proper TV series built around the format. I liked Thunderbolts*, but it didn’t perform well. Marvel will hope The Fantastic Four: First Steps will show signs of some growth again.
Of course, Gunn himself now has that pressure to deliver his own superhero franchise. Gunn therefore also talked about how (currently) things are different at DC Studios.
“We have to treat every project as if we’re lucky. We don’t have the mandate to have a certain amount of movies and TV shows every year. So we’re going to put out everything that we think is of the highest quality. We’re obviously going to do some good things and some not-so-good things, but hopefully on average everything will be as high-quality as possible.”
So, what do you think of James Gunn’s comments on how the MCU suffered due to corporate demands for more content? I find it hard to disagree with anything he said here. Thoughts below.
