It feels like a long while since moviegoers have had a laugh-out-loud comedy on the big screen, especially in the spoof genre, which was tarnished by low-rent Scary Movie sequels and the critically derided comedies of Friedberg and Seltzer. Fresh off the announcement of the Spaceballs sequel, we finally get our first full glimpse of Liam Neeson’s reboot of The Naked Gun.
I’ve been a huge fan of the Leslie Nielsen trilogy since I was a kid. There were talks for years of a fresh new take on the property with a new star like Ed Helms as Frank Drebin, Jr. There was even one point in the late 2000s when a fourth Naked Gun script circulated the web, written as a spoof of dirty cop dramas like Training Day and The Departed. Upon hearing word about Neeson heading the reboot, I thought it was the perfect way for the most unlikely action star of our time to finally poke fun at a genre he has exhausted for the last fifteen years.
Based on the trailer, this new take on the franchise is based on the short-lived ABC series Police Squad! features Neeson and Paul Walter Hauser as the sons of the characters originated by Nielsen and George Kennedy. There’s even a hilarious nod to Nordberg, played previously by the infamous O.J. Simpson. Additionally, Pamela Anderson plays Neeson’s femme fatale love interest akin to Priscilla Presley’s Jane Spencer.
Not everyone is happy that this reboot is happening. Original Naked Gun director David Zucker voiced his displeasure at the project to The Hollywood Reporter this past May.
“I read the script, and I politely told them I wasn’t going to put my name on it. They wanted nothing from me except my name. They assume I’m old and using a walker and I can’t do it anymore. I guess talent leaves after age 40 in Hollywood.”
