Nintendo Switch 2 Breaks Sales Records

Nintendo has announced that the recently released Switch 2 has set an all-time launch record for U.S. console hardware sales.

The record, previously held by the PlayStation 4, has been overtaken by the Switch 2, which sold 1.1 million units in the US during its first week on sale.

In addition, almost 80% of players who purchased a Nintendo Switch 2 also purchased “Mario Kart World” – either as a standalone game or as part of the hardware bundle option in which it was a pack-in title.

Circana adds that the three best-selling physical games during the Switch 2’s launch week were “Mario Kart World,” Cyberpunk 2077″ (which was released on Switch 2) and “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition”.

It follows on from the console selling 947,931 units in its first four days on sale in Japan – and that’s not including sales on Nintendo’s official My Nintendo Store, which would almost certainly push it over the one million mark.

Like in the U.S., it is by far the biggest console launch in Japan, beating the prior record of 630,000 units sold at launch by PlayStation 2.

Learning the lesson regarding stock shortages and supply chain issues that impacted the launches of both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X, Nintendo has been shipping and stockpiling Switch 2 units for months ahead of release in order to meet demand.

This resulted in a plentiful supply of the console. Combined with efforts to combat scalpers, and there is a quite visible lack of resellers on eBay and the like, with many rejoicing online about the bath that scalpers are taking on the device.
