Venice decided to introduce a city tax for 29 days in 2024 to reduce the number of day visitors coming to the city who don’t stay overnight, but there must also be a revenue component to this decision.

The entry fee will be extended to 53 days this year, covering all Thursday to Sunday days in May, June, and July. The cost will also increase to 10 euros unless you buy the entry at least four days in advance, when it is 5 euros.

The visit tax is applicable for those who do not stay within the Venice Municipality and is in effect during daytime hours, from 8:30 AM to 4 PM.

Even if you don’t need to pay this tax, you need to apply for the waiver on the Municipality’s website.

Conclusion

I was in Venice last year when this entry fee was in place, and the collection of it had been professionally implemented to ensure that those who needed to pay it had done so.

There was an inspection point at the airport when you entered the ferry area for Venice, and several spots inside the city itself, including a significant presence right at the front of the Santa Lucia train station.

So, the fee doubles to 10 euros, unless you buy it in advance, and the days to which it applies have also significantly expanded. Nothing that we couldn’t foresee last year.

The fee is still insignificant to truly reduce the number of visitors.
