Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries has scored the title role in the DC Studios film “Clayface” based on the famed Batman villain.

The actor beat out the likes of Jack O’Connell (“Sinners”), Tom Blyth (“Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”) and George MacKay (“1917”) for the role in the movie which is being directed by James Watkins (“Speak No Evil,” “The Woman in Black”).

Heavily inspired by the “Feat of Clay” episodes from the 1990s’ “Batman: The Animated Series,” the project has been penned by acclaimed filmmaker Mike Flanagan with revisions by Hossein Amini (“Drive,” “Our Kind of Traitor”).

The synopsis is under wraps, but the original episodes followed an actor named Matt Hagen who was disfigured in a car crash. Businessman/mob boss Roland Daggett offers him a supply of experimental face cream, allowing him to transform his face for short periods into whatever appearance he wants – at the cost of doing ‘jobs’ for Daggett.

Considered expendable after a job gone bad, Daggett’s goons force an entire vat of the substance down Hagen’s throat and leave him for dead. But he mutates into a walking creature of clay who can shapeshift into anyone at will, and he sets out for revenge.

Rhys Harries is best known for his roles as Manchester DJ Axel Collins in Netflix’s “White Lines,” alongside Uma Thurman in the Apple TV+ series “Suspicion,” and small roles in films like “The Gentlemen,” “Kandahar” and “The Return”. More recently he starred as hearthrob Ricky September in the “Dot and Bubble” episode of “Doctor Who” last year.

DC Studios chief James Gunn says in a posting on X: “After a long and incredibly exhaustive search, we finally have our DCU Clayface in Tom Rhys Harries. Both Matt Reeves and I were just blown away by this guy, and can’t wait for you to see this film.”

“Clayface” will kick off shooting at Warner Bros Leavesden studio in the U.K. this Summer for a September 11th 2026 release.
