BMW Concept Speedtop is a limited-edition tribute to the grand touring heritage

BMW has introduced the Concept Speedtop at the 2025 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, reaffirming its dedication to design-driven innovation and bespoke craftsmanship. Conceived as a coachbuilt limited edition, the Speedtop embodies the spirit of the classic shooting brake while showcasing modern engineering and aesthetics heading into the electrified future. Only 70 units of the tourer will ever be produced, targeting collectors and enthusiasts drawn to heritage-infused exclusivity.

Built by BMW’s specialized Manufaktur division in Dingolfing, the Concept Speedtop leverages the design philosophy of BMW’s historic grand tourers while evolving it for the modern era. The vehicle is based on the 8 Series convertible platform and features a bold reinterpretation of the shark-nose grille, a hallmark of BMW’s legacy. The sculpted front end flows into an elongated hood with twin air outlets and a central spline, reminiscent of the BMW 503 from the 1950s.

Designer: BMW Group

At nearly five meters long and two meters wide, the Speedtop exudes presence and poise. Its coupé-like proportions and low stance are complemented by a seamlessly integrated roof that transitions from a deep “Floating Sunstone Maroon” at the front to a bright “Floating Sundown Silver” at the rear. Aerodynamically refined and visually balanced, the exterior is fitted with bespoke 21-inch 14-spoke wheels designed for both aesthetics and performance.

The cabin of the Concept Speedtop is configured for two occupants and is finished in hand-stitched leather upholstery that blends “Sundown Maroon” with “Moonstone White.” Interior detailing includes brogue-style accents, precision-milled aluminum trim, and a bespoke pair of Schedoni leather luggage pieces integrated into the rear compartment in place of rear seats. Every element is executed to highlight craftsmanship and the tactile qualities of luxury materials.

Performance is supplied by BMW’s most powerful V8 engine, combining high torque delivery with smooth power progression. While exact output figures have not been disclosed, it aligns with the drivetrain used in high-performance 8 Series variants. The powertrain is paired with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system and a sport-tuned suspension to ensure both stability and dynamic responsiveness.

The Concept Speedtop is not slated for release in the United States due to homologation limitations but will be available by request in select global markets. Each of the 70 units will be customized through a client-coordinated process, allowing buyers to influence material selection and finish details. This personalization further reinforces the vehicle’s identity as a modern coachbuilt automobile.

With the Concept Speedtop, BMW continues a tradition of unveiling bespoke concepts at the Villa d’Este event, following the Concept Skytop in 2024. This new hand-built model pays homage to BMW’s design heritage while embracing modern luxury and performance expectations of purist clients. The result is a collector-grade vehicle that fuses design history with a forward-looking approach to exclusivity and driving enjoyment. How about that?
