2022’s Top Gun: Maverick was 36 years in the making for its star Tom Cruise. It’s no surprise Paramount wants a third installment right away. The $1.49 billion grossing blockbuster was declared by Steven Spielberg as the movie that saved theaters post-pandemic. The question is how long do we wait for the next one?

Maverick co-screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, fresh off the release of his latest Cruise effort Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, revealed that he and Ehren Kruger have Top Gun 3’s story “already in the bag” during an interview with the Happy Sad Confused Podcast.

“Krueger pitched something and we had one conversation about it, and the framework is there. So no, it’s not hard to crack.”

Maverick was praised by critics for more than just Cruise and company piloting real fighter jets. It had a far superior story than the original, driven by Cruise’s wiser but still energetic icon of a character. McQuarrie confirmed the same approach will be taken for Top Gun 3.

“As you start to execute it… you start [to think] why these movies are made the way they are. It’s not the action, it’s not even the level of or intensity of or the scope and scale of the action… It’s none of those things. It’s the emotion.”

Critics also praised Joseph Kosinski’s overall direction as a fitting tribute to the late Top Gun filmmaker Tony Scott who had planned on returning for the sequel until his untimely death in 2012. Kosinski’s status for the next installment remains unknown as he’s prepping for the release of F1 starring Brad Pitt and in early talks for a Miami Vice theatrical reboot at Universal. But if Cruise needs his go-to director to get inside the cockpit, McQuarrie hints he can handle it just fine.

“I have given that absolutely no thought, no thought whatsoever. However, I have done a lot of research into how to make a Tony Scott movie.”
