American Express has just closed its popular Centurion Lounge at San Francisco Airport Terminal 3 for a renovation project that is expected to last at least two years.

The location is now permanently closed as the entire terminal is undergoing construction in a modernization effort, but Amex is working on a temporary Centurion Lounge that might open later next month.

You can access the American Express Lounge Directory here for this club’s details and closure notice.

American Express’ Centurion Lounge in SFO has always been very popular, and it wasn’t unheard of that Platinum cardholders were denied entry and placed on a long waiting list due to overcrowding.

Yesterday, on May 27th, the Centurion Lounge closed its doors, so now cardholders have nowhere to go.

Some were told last week that Amex is working on securing a spot in another part of the airport, likely Terminal 2, to build a temporary lounge, as the construction is likely going to last two years or longer.

A spokesperson for SFO Airport, as the real estate owner, confirmed to us that the interim location will be in Terminal 2:

I can confirm that a temporary location will open post-security in Terminal 2 in mid- to late-June. As all SFO terminals are now connected post-security, so club users will be able to access it from any terminal.

We can only wait and see how this works out. I haven’t been through SFO since 2022, and currently don’t have any U.S.-bound travel plans. Maybe one of my friends can give it a try later next month.

Conclusion

American Express Platinum and Centurion cardholders flying from San Francisco no longer have the opportunity to visit the Centurion Lounge for the time being, as the club just closed its doors due to construction and won’t reopen for at least two years.

The interim Amex Centurion lounge will be located in Terminal 2, and with a bit of effort and expense invested, that might even be comfortable as they move there for a full two years. However, the exact opening date has not been confirmed yet. Amex/SFO aim for mid to late June.

The Centurion Lounge at SFO has always been somewhat difficult, as SFO is a large hub, the lounge wasn’t huge, and there are plenty of premium cardholders in the market. Long waitlists and upset customers were not uncommon, many had to leave for their flight without ever being able to get in.

Hopefully, Amex finds a long-term, spacious solution for SFO, because this situation really sucks!
