John Fogerty Reclaims Creedence ‘Legacy’ With New Re-Records

John Fogerty is pulling a Taylor Swift. The former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has re-recorded 20 of his best-known songs for the collection Legacy: The Creedence Clearwater Revival Years, which he announced onstage last night (May 28) during an 80th birthday concert at New York’s Beacon Theatre. It will be released Aug. 22.

The move is especially significant given that Fogerty did not own the rights to those Creedence songs dating back to a disputed contract he signed with Fantasy Records in the 1960s — a saga that involved multiple lawsuits and public insults and was only resolved in 2023 as part of a new deal with Fantasy parent company Concord.

More from Spin:

“For most of my life I did not own the songs I had written,” Fogerty says. “Getting them back changes everything. Legacy is my way of celebrating that — of playing these songs on my terms, with the people I love.” The re-record concept has been pioneered in recent years by Taylor Swift, who made new versions of her first several albums after the rights were purchased by a third party.

“You get a great sense of satisfaction in the most humble way,” Fogerty told SPIN in 2021 of the enduring appeal of his older material “It’s a great sense of pride that the songs are still played, that they still mean something to people, and it helps me to feel that I’m in it musically. Rather than everything being in the rearview mirror, which is the way it could have been, I feel like I’m looking at the front of the vehicle, through the windshield and seeing where this road might take me.”

Legacy finds Fogerty backed by his sons Shane and Tyler and can be previewed via renditions of “Up Around the Bend” “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” and “Porterville,” which are out now. A different take on “Up Around the Bend” with assistance from Eric Church is also serving as the theme song for NASCAR broadcasts on Amazon Prime.
