Dezeen Showroom: the unique aesthetic qualities of unusual species of wood are celebrated in this range of live-edge tables by Japanese furniture brand Area.
Made from solid wood, Slab tables feature a live-edge top that is sanded and polished to bring out the natural grain of the timber. This is supported by legs that come in a choice of designs.
The table is designed by Area's founder and executive designer Go Noda, who Area describes as having a deep knowledge of Japanese and Asian cultural history that is intricately woven into each product.
Each table is one of a kind, made from wood that is carefully selected as a prime example of its species. The pieces are further refined during the years-long drying and manufacturing process, during which the team rejects pieces showing splits, rot or insect damage.
Area works with a range of woods from around the world including black walnut, monkeypod, Japanese horse chestnut and Japanese zelkova. Each piece of timber is handled and processed by woodworkers in Japan.
The Slab table is finished with a thin polyurethane coating that Area says protects against moisture and scratches without disrupting the warm feel of the wood.
