“Kung Fury” Creator Announces “Dragonlord”

With his “Kung Fury” movie stuck in rights limbo, Swedish filmmaker David Sandberg is turning to another crazy project to develop in the meantime – “Dragonlord”.

Variety reports that the project is a ‘fantasy punk’ film which blends action, comedy and sci-fi. The story unfolds in a world which is “like ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Mad Max, ‘Lord of the Rings’ and He-Man mashed into one, where dinosaurs from the past co-exist with robots from the future — and everything in between.”

Sandberg himself will play Dragonlord, a treasure-obsessed hunter whose best friend is a Tyrannosaurus Rex named Blaze Falcon who just wants to hang out and play video games.

When Blaze is kidnapped by the evil Skeletor-esque Dreadmancer, Dragonlord must pull together an Avengers-style team of bonkers heroes to save his buddy.

Other characters include Budgie (a bird man who poos acid), a techie named Quantum Cobra, the sinister Dread Riders, and the Sword Lord who was bad but fell in love with a unicorn and is now good.

Tonally the film is said to be very similar to his “Kung Fury” short which dealt with kung fu cops alongside half-human/half-dinosaur crime-fighting partners along with a major mishmash of tones and styles which homaged 80s action movies.

The script for the project is currently being polished, with the casting process set to begin soon and a Spring 2026 shoot being targeted. The project will make heavy use of virtual production tech (ie. The Volume) as opposed to heavy green screen use like “Kung Fury”.

Finnish entrepreneur Mikko Kodisoja, whose gaming company created “Clash of Clans,” is financing the project.
