Last year, Delta Air Lines started an interesting partnership much to the pleasure of burger-lovers as the carrier began serving Shake Shack burgers beginning with flights out of Boston and New York.
The airline has now rolled out the partnership to more gateways and the local caterers are stocking flights from several additional gateways starting June 3, 2025 (yesterday) with delicious burgers.
Since its inception last year, the partnership has been very popular, and travelers have responded well to the introduction of Shake Shack burgers and chips on Delta flights.
Airlines have experimented with burgers on their flights before, but despite it being a simple dish on one hand, it’s also something rather delicate on the other, as piecing together a good, edible burger isn’t all that easy and can easily result in a soggy mess or an unedible hockey puck.
Delta’s rollout of the Shake Shack products started last December on flights from Boston and then this March they continued with New York LGA and Seattle.
“Customers are raving about the Shake Shack experience onboard our flights after serving more than 10,000 burgers out of Boston since launching in December,” said Stephanie Laster, Managing Director of Onboard Service. “This is part of our work to partner with brands our customers already know and love while continuing to raise the bar for the in-flight experience – whether that’s making your favorite cheeseburger available at 35,000 feet, or ensuring you have a variety of fresh meals to choose from that fuel you on your adventure.”
First launched out of Boston at the end of 2024, the Shake Shack Cheeseburger was an instant hit with customers. The Shake Shack Cheeseburger features a 100% Angus beef patty, topped with cheese and served on a toasted potato bun. Customers can customize their burger to create the signature ShackBurger, with toppings like tomato, lettuce and Shake Shack’s famous ShackSauce, all served on the side. The meal also features chips, a Caesar salad and a dark chocolate brownie.
“Our partnership with Delta has been a truly fantastic way to bring Shake Shack to even more guests in a setting where hospitality truly matters – while traveling,” said Michael Kark, President of Global Licensing at Shake Shack. “The response has been incredible, and we’re thrilled to expand this partnership, giving even more Delta travelers the chance to enjoy Shake Shack along their journey.”
Customers sitting in First Class on routes over 900 miles can select the Shake Shack Cheeseburger as their entrée for lunch or dinner before their flight. First Class customers can make and edit their entrée selection up to 24 hours in advance using the Fly Delta app or the link in their email, starting seven days before departure. …
As the airline promised, they worked on additional gateways to provide this service from, and yesterday it was time to cut the ribbon for “Shack in the air” from
- Las Vegas,
- Miami,
- Minneapolis,
- New York JFK,
- Orlando,
- Salt Lake City, and
- San Francisco
Delta also promised that it will be available from their Detroit hub “within the month” so travelers can rejoice.
Emphasis should be given to the fact that customers who want to try the Shake Shack Burger have to pre-order it up to 24 hours prior to the flight, meaning you have to be confirmed in First Class at least a day before in order to get this. Same-day upgrades or passengers on changed itineraries won’t be able to order a burger in the air.
Even though this image is a mock-up and probably looks 3x better than it’ll really look once served up in the air, it’s probably miles better than its pendant, the infamous American Airlines Burger, which I find quite horrible whenever it was available.
Instead of fries, the Burger is served with chips and a Caesar salad as well as a brownie. Looks nice!
Conclusion
Delta Air Lines and Shake Shack are embarking on a new partnership, and First Class passengers are now able to order a Shake Shack burger in the skies from even more destinations.
Pre-Order service for this meal is available up to 24h prior to the flights on limited routes. It started on December 1st from Boston-Logan, and has been successfully introduced on more routes throughout the U.S..
I would be very interested in how the actual product looks (and tastes), so if you tried one of these, feel free to send us a picture.
