Piero Lissoni’s Budapest Hotel Design Spans Three Centuries
Piero Lissoni transforms Budapest buildings from different eras into Dorothea Hotel where history remains visible while serving contemporary needs.

The Dorothea Hotel, Budapest, Autograph Collection represents a sophisticated approach to adaptive reuse that transcends mere preservation. In the heart of Budapest’s District V, three buildings stand as architectural witnesses to a century of Hungarian history. Under Piero Lissoni’s direction, these structures have been transformed into a hotel that functions as a living palimpsest, where each layer of history remains visible while serving contemporary needs.
Rather than imposing a singular aesthetic vision, Lissoni allowed each building’s inherent character to guide his interventions. The material strategy throughout the hotel demonstrates this philosophy in practice. In the Weber building’s heritage rooms, decorative cornicing frames neo-renaissance windows while four-poster beds create intimate spaces within. The herringbone flooring provides textural richness while black and white carpeting creates visual grounding.
The hotel’s “Mark” – the succulent herb wall at Pavilon Restaurant – transforms functional architecture into living craft. This vertical garden pays homage to Palatine Joseph’s botanical interests while serving the practical needs of the kitchen, creating a productive ornament. The wall becomes simultaneously decorative element, agricultural system, and historical reference.
“Each Autograph Collection hotel tells a truly unique story and Dorothea Hotel, Budapest, Autograph Collection is a shining example of this, reflecting the rich history of Budapest through a refined and sophisticated lens,” said Sandra Schulze-Potgieter, Vice President, Premium and Select Brands, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Marriott International. “From the revitalized historic architecture and storied guestrooms to a progressive dining experience and hidden spa, the hotel offers an authentic sense of place and an experience that invites guests to forge a meaningful connection with the destination.”
