Plenty of breathless reports about test screening reactions have flown around about James Gunn’s “Superman” over the past few months.
Initial ones suggested the film had issues, but more recent ones indicate Gunn has taken criticism onboard and made various adjustments – with the results said to be performing better.
Now though, the film’s main superhero rival at the box-office this Summer is finding itself the subject of similar test screening reports. Both World of Reel and The Insneider are reporting that “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” held a screening this week in Los Angeles.
The first outlet describes the reaction as “painfully mid” while the other says it’s “Not that bad, but not that good, either.” Each are citing multiple reactions with all indicating several problem factors.
Some are with the VFX which were unfinished and will be improved, others complained about the character development. The latter outlet also says Ralph Ineson’s Galactus reportedly “went over well with the crowd.”
Marvel only does public test screenings for a handful of its films, most notably with “The Marvels” and “Captain America: Brave New World” which both launched to tepid/mixed reviews and underwhelming box-office.
Longtime test screening scooper ViewerAnon says “the film is very unfinished, much more than you’d expect from something coming out in two months” which would partly explains the reaction.
They add that “reactions are more consistently ‘okay’ whereas the ‘Superman’ reactions swing wildly between love/like/didn’t like/hate.”
“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” stars Pedro Pascal, Julia Garner, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bacharach. The film opens in cinemas on July 25th while a panel for the film is taking place today at CCXP Mexico.
