Sony’s “Karate Kid: Legends” hasn’t quite been the box-office powerhouse that was hoped. Last week, domestic projections had it at a $25 million opening weekend, but it’s now looking closer to $21 million, says the studio, while others are indicating it could be lower than that at around $19-20 million.

The $45 million budget film has been open since early May in some global territories, and has so far managed a further $26 million overseas – bringing its worldwide gross to $47 million. So, it likely won’t lose money for the studio at least – a lot will depend on how it fares next weekend and if those high audience scores pan out.

The box-office is instead all about “Lilo & Stitch” and “Mission: Impossible”. The Disney live-action remake of 2002’s “Lilo & Stitch” is at $63 million domestically in its second weekend, a drop of 57%. Internationally, it fared even better – taking in a further $113.1 million overseas this weekend and a drop of just 28%. The result is a worldwide gross so far of $611 million and a good shot at the title, either coming close to or breaking the billion-dollar mark by the end of its run.

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” pulled in a further $27.3 million domestically – dropping the same 57% rate. Internationally, it’s also performing better with $76.1 million from overseas – only a 33% drop in its second frame. Overall, the film has a worldwide gross so far of $354 million.

“Final Destination Bloodlines” also continues to impress, the $50 million-budgeted horror feature has pulled in $229 million worldwide so far with a fairly even half domestic/half overseas split. It banked a further $10.8 million domestically this weekend.

A24 unveiled horror film”Bring Her Back” which opened in fifth place domestically with $7.1 million – a decent start for the gory and well-reviewed title.

The biggest news for this weekend though, outside of ‘Karate’ fizzling, is Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme” which is the top grossing limited opening of the year with an estimated $570,000 from just six locations in New York and LA – a per screen average of $95,000. The film will expand to 1,500 cinemas next weekend.
