The 2003 Napoleonic-era naval warfare masterpiece “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” is making the jump to 4K disc reports The Digital Bits.
Touchstone and 20th Century Studios will release the title via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment as part of the deal announced early last year that has Sony taking over all of Disney’s physical media production and distribution going forward.
Under the deal, several old Disney/Fox catalogue titles have made the jump to 4K recently, including “Tombstone” in April and “Kingdom of Heaven” in May. Now comes Peter Weir’s celebrated film.
An adaptation of the Patrick O’Brian book series, the film follows Capt. Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe) who pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America.
Paul Bettany co-starred in the film which made over $200 million worldwide and scored ten Oscar nominations including Best Picture.
It’s expected the release will contain a 4K Dolby Vision HDR copy of the film along with a more standard Blu-ray release. No details about the disc’s content is available at this time, while a release is said to be targeting an August/September window.
