Madison Replaces Sweeney On “Red Death”

Oscar winner Mikey Madison (“Anora”) is set to replace Sydney Sweeney on the upcoming re-imagining of the famed Edgar Allan Poe story “The Masque of the Red Death” at A24 and Picturestart.

Sweeney was linked to the project back in January, the film described as a “wildly revisionist and darkly comedic” take on the famed Edgar Allan Poe novella. However, her commitment to film “Gundam” this Fall is keeping her away as this aims to shoot either at the end of the year or early next year.

That original story follows mad Prince Prospero’s attempts to avoid a dangerous plague by hiding in his abbey. He, along with many other wealthy nobles, hosts a masquerade ball – a world of orgies, opium, power schemes and revenge.

In the midst of their revelry, a mysterious figure disguised as a Red Death victim enters, and Prospero and the guests also die. The concept was given a modern interpretation in Mike Flanagan’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” mini-series.

Playwright Charlie Polinger will write, direct, and executive produce alongside Lucy McKendrick.

Madison is known for being very particular in choosing her roles since her success with “Anora” but was briefly in talks to play a villain in “Star Wars: Starfighter” and is attached to the quirky dentist-mermaid love story “Reptilia”.
